DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN I TOLD YOU THIS THAT NIGHT, THAT IF YOU’RE BY MY SIDE WHEN EVERYDAY BEGINS, I’LL FALL FOR YOU AGAIN? I MADE A PROMISE WHEN I TOLD YOU THIS THAT NIGHT. -----------------------------------------------------------
how the fuck could she say that? she knew what comparing him to his dad meant to him. she knew that it was way out of line, one of the few insults they never used because it was just too much, too harsh, too mean. how the fuck dare she compare him to that piece of shit. he knew she hadn't said it out loud but there was no doubt that she'd been thinking it. her guilty expression had told him that. she knew she shouldn't have said it, & yet, she had, she had, & there was no taking it back, because now it was hanging in the air, taunting him. he clenched his jaw & watched as she walked away, hating that things were so shit, hating that they fucked up so badly that there wasn't a solution. he wanted things to be normal again, to how they'd been when they were kids, when the only thing they had to worry about was not getting caught sneaking out, or being grounded. being grown up & having to worry about relationships & families & other people just wasn't what trav wanted. he frowned slightly as poppy froze, stopped walking, half glad that what he'd said had struck a nerve & half annoyed that she couldn't just fuck off now & get it over with. his dad had left him, colton had left him, dante had left him, countless other people had left him; poppy's leaving would be no different.
"then why the fuck are we doing this?!" he shouted back, rubbing his hand over his face, running his fingers through his hair in exasperation before giving up. no, he couldn't give up. don't give up. giving up makes you like him. don't give up. he looked back up at her, feeling a tug in his chest at her expression, all frustration & determination. he didn't want her to leave, she couldn't leave him. she was the only person holding him together; if she left him, trav didn't know what he'd do. nora was depending on him, his mum was depending on him, his brothers depended upon him to make sure their mum left them alone. why the fuck couldn't they do it themselves? why did everyone expect so much of him? poppy was the only one who didn't completely rely upon him, poppy was the only person who sorted him out & told him to shut the fuck up when he was being a bastard. he stared at her, staying exactly where he was, waiting for another insult, another retort, something scathing that would sting & force them to ignore each other for days because they were both so fucking stubborn. trav would walk off & lick his wounds, & would then drink himself into oblivion, forcing himself to forget because remembering this would kill him. he hated hurting poppy, he really did, yet she was so fucking annoying that sometimes, he just couldn't help himself.
& then suddenly, she was moving, running towards him as though she was scared he was going to bolt. trav's arms wound around her as she crashed into him, unable to stop himself, knowing that this was wrong & stupid but at the same time it was unbelievably right & he was kicking himself for not doing this sooner. his lips found hers & kissed her back greedily, trying to make up for all those times when he should have kissed her & didn't, trying to apologise for those times he was an absolute dick & hurt her, trying to say sorry for last night because he knew words weren't fucking enough, they never were. his hands slid into her hair before moving down her body, wrapping themselves around her waist, pulling her as close to him as he possibly could. that ridiculously seductive poppy scent was making him dizzy, assailing his senses & making him want to never let go, to want to hold her forever. he didn't care if he sounded like a love-sick bastard, this was poppy, & things with her were never simple. she pulled away, & trav used the opportunity as a chance to breathe, before he shook his head disregarding her words & pressed his lips back against hers.
